Root Canal Therapy in Rochester, MN

One of the most common dental myths is that getting a root canal is a painful, terrible experience. This myth comes from old stories of the past from the dentistry of our parents or grandparents’ generation. The truth is, a modern root canal does not cause pain; it relieves it!

Thanks to advanced technology and aesthetics, you can expect to have a simple, pleasant root canal treatment at our dental office in Rochester.

Do I need a Root Canal?

There are several reasons why a tooth might need root canal therapy. The most common are:

  • Dental abscess
  • Deep areas of tooth decay
  • Past trauma to the tooth
  • Tooth death
  • Severe pain or hypersensitivity
  • Cracked teeth

It’s possible that these cases may not require a root canal. Sometimes patients are referred to us specifically for a consultation with an endodontic expert. During your exam, we’ll utilize our modern technology to pinpoint complex conditions and recommend the best and most conservative treatment option for you.

What happens during a Root Canal?

During a traditional root canal, the infected pulp or nerve inside the tooth is removed. Then, the now hollow chambers are cleaned and sterilized to ensure that all bacteria are eliminated. Finally, the canals are filled, sealing off the inside of the tooth and preventing reinfection. Because the nerve tissue was removed, the tooth’s enamel is no longer vital, so a crown is needed to protect the tooth from chipping or wearing down over time.

Root Canal Re-Treatment

If you have previously gotten a root canal that has since failed due to inadequate treatment or a complex root system, a re-treatment may be necessary. In some cases, problems such as new decay or a cracked or loose crown can expose the tooth to new infection.

Signs you may need a root canal re-treatment:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tooth pain
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Swollen gums

During a root canal re-treatment, the procedure is similar to an initial root canal, but instead of removing the root, the goal is the remove the filling material and thoroughly remove all of the bacteria in the canal. Technology such as microscopic magnification, 3D imaging, and advanced irrigation help our endodontists complete your root canal effectively the first time. With appropriate care, your treated tooth should last as long as your natural teeth.

What happens if the root canal doesn’t work?

An apicoectomy, or endodontic microsurgery, is a dental procedure that is sometimes recommended if a root canal treatment has failed or if there is a persistent infection or inflammation around the tip of the tooth’s root. The procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root, along with the infected or inflamed tissue, and then sealing the end of the root to prevent further infection. If you are still experiencing pain or other problems after having a root canal, our endodontist can help! Learn more about Apicoectomy treatment here.
